Free tax help

You do not need to pay for help with a simple return. These free programs are run or certified by the IRS.

• Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Free basic return preparation for qualifying taxpayers. IRS: free tax return preparation.
• Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE). Free tax help, particularly for people aged 60 and older, at sites listed on the same IRS page.
• AARP Foundation Tax-Aide. Part of the TCE program; find a site between January and April with the AARP Tax-Aide site locator or by calling 888-227-7669.
• IRS Free File. Free tax software for qualifying taxpayers: IRS Free File.
