New York capital gains tax, 2026
New York taxes capital gains as ordinary income, at rates from 3.9% to 10.9%. On a $100,000 long-term gain, a single filer with $80,000 of other income pays $5,857 of New York tax, on top of $15,000 federal.
New York takes back the benefit of its lower brackets at high incomes, so for a large gain the tax is higher than the brackets alone show. New York City and Yonkers residents also pay a local income tax.
